5 Reasons Why You Should Visit Kawagoe

A few weeks ago, I had the remarkable opportunity to visit Kawagoe for what was probably the third time. However, this visit was different. In the past, I was too overwhelmed to fully appreciate the moment—have you ever been so taken aback by being somewhere you never imagined visiting, let alone living? It’s a surreal feeling. This time around, I was truly present, allowing myself to see, feel, and think deeply about my surroundings. And it’s from this place of reflection that I want to share with you the 5 reasons why you should consider adding Kawagoe to your travel itinerary. One of the most convenient aspects of Kawagoe is its accessibility from Tokyo. A quick glance at Google Maps reveals several routes to get there, none of which are expensive. Luckily for me, I’m just two stations away from Kawagoe Station. Its relatively small size compared to Tokyo also means that it’s harder to get lost, making it an easy day trip for anyone looking to escape the city’s hustle and bustle.

2. Less Crowded

If your goal is to experience a different side of Japan without the usual crowds, Kawagoe is the perfect destination. The town is noticeably cleaner and quieter, offering a peaceful retreat without straying too far from the conveniences of the city.

3. Edo Vibes

Kawagoe is renowned for its well-preserved Edo-period ambiance, particularly its historic castle town. To fully immerse yourself in the experience, I recommend renting a kimono and strolling through the streets. It’s as if you’ve stepped back in time, walking in the footsteps of those who lived in the Edo era.

4. Traditional Snacks Galore

For those with a sweet tooth, Kawagoe does not disappoint. Almost every local shop offers a wide variety of traditional Japanese snacks. It’s a great way to taste the local cuisine and perhaps discover a new favorite treat.

Although buses are available, the best way to explore Kawagoe’s historical and significant spots is on foot. It’s not just about the destination but the discoveries you make along the way. Walking allows you to uncover the town’s hidden gems at your own pace.
